Things to check while renting an apartment

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Renting an apartment must be a very thought after decision or you are going to regret and remorse all the lifetime. Just taking care of a few things can make sure that you end up picking up a very good place. Let’s see what they are.

  1. Ask others
Ask neighbors and old tenants about the place, their opinion and suggestions. You can easily get a lot of information from what they say and what they don’t. Make sure you ask a few people before you frame your opinion or it may be skewed. Ask them all details possible, this will be the most legitimate opinion you’d get about the place.
  2. Visit the place first
Rather than seeing the place in pics or video, it might be a better idea to actually visit the place in person. You can find out more information about the place this way than anyway else. Have a look around, see if the place is good enough to hold all your household equipments.
  3. Check for competition
Before deciding on any apartment, find out what the competition is and what they have to offer. Make note of the details and keep a reference card while you meet the new landlords. Based on what they suggest, you can always compare quotes and pick the best right away.
  4. See if there is proper connectivity
While visiting the place, check the neighborhood for  proper connectivity. Look for hospitals, stores, roads, stations etc and make sure that they are all well within distance.
  5. Check the legal documents
While signing documents at the new place, make sure that you have everything in place. Every state would have different set of laws, so make sure it’s all clear and evident.
  6. How much time
Always ask the new landlord as to how much time will it take to enter the new place. Most people are clear on this and will give you the right time frame available. If they ask you for unreasonably longer time, then you might want to check for other options.

Essentially, renting an apartment is fairly a simple process but things can get complicated when you don’t have direct access to things. Things can go out of hand as well sometimes. The key is to get the right information from the right places at the right time and you will have a smooth time moving places.

Tips For Relocating And Moving To A New Home

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

It’s a mess moving places. It’s a nightmare for many, but for some who know the tactics, it’s a cakewalk..well almost a cakewalk.
The biggest problem we face is the question - How to move things safely and at lesser cost, in less time. And not many are able to balance all the three together. But yes, there are a few things that you can take care of yourself, that will ensure a smooth and safe transition while moving places.

  1. Make a list of things
Always, always make a list of things prior to moving. It is very easy to miss things while moving , so it makes all sense to make a list of all the things that you want to move. Keep a check list and keep checking them while they are packed.
  2. Plan your things
You need a carefully drafted plan and prioritize things. First things first and all the rest last. Pack the brittle and breakable things first, into safe boxes and then go ahead to the bigger ones. Planning is a good way to make sure you don’t mess up things.
  3. Get someone’s help
it’s always advisable to get someone’s help while packing and moving. When you do things yourself you tend to panic and will not be able to get yourself out to all the corners. So get help and plan things accordingly.
  4. Use lot of boxes
Boxes, boxes, boxes. use lot of them, big small and large. Get them from a shop or get those old ones. Use them to pack things safely. Using boxes will also help you to arrange things safely utilizing lot of space.
  5. Labeling and marking
When you use boxes, it’s a good practice to mark and label things so that you don’t have to guess what’s inside while you are unwrapping it. So label and mark things accordingly. If possible, use colors to categorize things. Like things in the kitchen be colored red, other room yellow etc.
  6. Keeping things together
Keep similar things together. Don’t put them randomly into different boxes. Put all the kitchen items to the “kitchen box”, and similar for other rooms. It’s easy while you unwrap things.
  7. Get a good vehicle
get a good spacious vehicle while you move things. Getting a small vehicle can save a lot of money may be, but while you save money, you might actually be destroying your things by stuffing or crowding them in to the little space. Spend some money so that you don’t have to replace things buying it later.
  8. Use lot of support
Use papers, cushions, sponges etc to stuff in between brittle and other things. They are good to take care of the shake and traction and will keep things in place. Use a lot of them, they are never enough.
